History - Established 1945

Established on July 6, 1945, the World War II Victory Medal Ribbon honors members of the United States Armed Forces who carried out duty between the dates of December 7, 1941 and December 31, 1946 inclusive. It was initially awarded as a ribbon alone, with the addition of the medal in 1946.

Details

The medal is bronze and depicts a female personification of Liberty standing with head in profile, right foot atop a war helmet and holding a broken sword. An inscription reads “WORLD WAR II.” On the reverse, a palm branch appears in the center along with inscriptions reading “FREEDOM FROM FEAR AND WANT” and “FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND RELIGION.” An additional inscription reading “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 1941-1945” encircles the medal.
